However, Microsoft has promised to replace all affected Xbox 360s. It’s always a frustration when a firmware update causes nasty things to happen to your expensive electronic device. Microsoft this time around seems sympathetic with some users’ plight of having their Xbox 360s suddenly unable to read retail games.
Following the RROD example, Microsoft has promised to replace all affected Xbox 360s with an S version that includes a 250GB hard drive, as well as extended time on Xbox Live Gold.
Just to make things clear, this has nothing to do with the beta firmware that went into public testing earlier this year. The crippling firmware is an older version and only affects certain Xboxs. The error is described below:
“This issue manifests itself a as a unique ‘disc unreadable’ or ‘disc unsupported’ error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console.”

Meanwhile, I need to go hook up my Xbox again; it needs some loving after being untouched for a year.
