Activision: No New Blizzard Games in 2011 (Update)

Looks like we will be waiting for Diablo III a bit longer than anticipated. Some individuals actually anticipated Diablo III in 2010. However, when 2011 came around most gamers were pretty sure that the game would hit stores within the year. Unfortunately, Activision COO Thomas Tippl, had something to say during a financial earnings call that shatters any hope for a release in 2011.

Because Blizzard Entertainment has not yet confirmed the launch date for its next global release. Our outlook at this time does not include a new game from Blizzard in 2011. Should we not release a major title from Blizzard this year, we would expect for planning purposes to launch a minimum of two Blizzard titles in 2012.

You probably noticed that Thomas Tippl mentioned two new games in 2012, not just one, which may be referring to the StarCraft II expansion, Heart of the Swarm. More evidence points to this as Blizzard president Mike Morhaime mentioned that Blizzard is hard at work on both Diablo III and the new StarCraft II expansion, but refused to comment further on the matter.

So how long will we have to wait? According to Morhaime, it will be around three months before we hear from him again about the Diablo III Beta. In addition, he won’t set a final release date for the game until it has been properly tested by the community. Until then, we’ll just have to wait and see what develops.
