If the newest rumors are true, the next Resident Evil game may come from the Great White North. These rumors surfaced after a document forwarded to Kotaku indicated a new, team-based Resident Evil game was secretly being developed by Slant Six, the developer behind the recent PS3 and PSP iterations of the critically acclaimed SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs series. The new game, if the rumor is true, will be called “Resident Evil: Raccoon City”. When questioned on the subject, Capcom gave a short reply:
“Capcom does not respond to rumors and speculation”
There is however, quite a bit of circumstantial evidence that supports the rumor. For instance, if you take a look at Slant Six’s official website, you will see a message scrawled stating:
Although we can’t say what we are working on right now, we are very excited to be creating a new product with an amazing publishing partner.
Another tidbit was that in March of this year, Slant Six was also looking for a Japanese translator/interpreter to join their ranks. Still more speculation arises from VGA’s recent zombie game teaser which was matched to the zombie silhouettes of an official Resident Evil shirt:
So what does this all mean? Well, since both Capcom and Slant Six refuse to officially comment on the subject, we’re pretty much left to our own devices at this point. Should the new Resident Evil feature SOCOM elements, you can bet there will be plenty of shootouts in the game along with a generous helping of co-op and multiplayer modes… a far cry from the more frightening story and gameplay older Resident Evil fans have yearned for. Since Capcom stated their desire to reboot the franchise, the idea doesn’t seem as far-fetched either. Just don’t expect to see Chris, Claire and the other protagonists again.
For now, Resident Evil fans can take solace in the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom 3 where you can pummel other characters using Chris, Wesker, and Jill.
So, what do you think of the latest (rumored) installment of Resident Evil from Capcom? Do you think the old characters should stay? Or should we get a new batch of fresh blood?
