So for you Xbox owners used to putting it vertical, you might want to arrange some space. While not a problem for many users, those that do prefer a vertical standing console, whether it’s for space or aesthetic reasons, are subject to possible hardware failure. In an interview with Gamespot, senior director Albert Panello simply said it wasn’t made for this kind of thing:
“We don’t support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk…It wouldn’t be a cooling problem, we just didn’t design the drive for vertical. Because it’s a slot loading drive, we just didn’t design it for both”.
He also said that around 80% of Xbox users place their consoles horizontal anyway. Statistics aside though, the slot-loading comment is a bit strange considering the Wii and slot versions of the PS3 are both able to stand vertically. Whether this becomes a problem after launch remains to be seen, though an inevitable second redesign will probably remove the issue.
No word yet on whether diagonal positioning is supported.

This is weird… Maybe a huge heatsink is sitting on top, overcompensating for the previous gen’s issues. I can’t blame them if that’s the case.
I’m sure someone will do a full tear down of the console, and we’ll know then.
