Western Digital Enters the High End SSD Market

Western Digitial’s HGST is readying some high end SSDs for businesses. These SSDs will be rather fast in fact they are skimping out on the SATA 3 interface in favor of SAS, which has a limit of 12Gbps. Their fastest offering utilizes MLC and has a 1200MB/s read and 750MB/s write speed. Storage size seems to range from 800GB to 1TB, so no doubt this is an expensive offering meant only for enterprises, but it is still interesting to see them enter the SSD market in general.

  • High Endurance Ultrastar SSD800MH – sequential throughput of up to 1200MB/s read and 750MB/s write; up to 145 000 read and 100 000 sustained write IOPS; up to 800GB; and the highest endurance rating at 25 full drive writes per day (DW/D) to support high-frequency trading and online transaction processing.
  • Mainstream Endurance Ultrastar SSD800MM – sequential throughput of up to 1200MB/s read and 700MB/s write; up to 145 000 read and 70 000 sustained write IOPS; up to 800GB; and a high endurance rating at 10 full DW/D to support online gaming, big data and cloud computing.
  • Read Intensive Ultrastar SSD1000MR – sequential throughput of up to 1,200MB/s read and 700MB/s write; up to 145,000 read and 20,000 sustained write IOPS; up to 1,000GB (1TB); and an endurance rating at two full DW/D to support online audio/video streaming, cloud computing and other Internet applications.
