AMD’s PS4 APU is the most powerful APU they have ever built, but now they are looking to bring it to the PC market. The APU that will be coming to PC consumers is reportedly a cut down version of the one found in the PS4. Currently, the PS4 APU contains tech from both AMD and Sony. It is unknown exactly how much the processor will be cut down, but at this point in time, the APU will lack Sony’s proprietary technology and it will have less CPU cores.
So, perhaps this means that you wont exactly be able to just throw PS4 games on a PC if that’s what you were planning to do. Maybe down the road some bright individuals could figure that out, but it looks like the tech to make that happen wont be present on the APU they are releasing to the PC market.
For those of you who are tech savvy, the GPU portion of the APU is rumored to hover around a 7970m laptop GPU, which performs around a 7850/7870 desktop variant on the AMD side and around a GTX 570 on Nvidia’s side. So, it is important to note that there are still more powerful dedicated GPUs out there, but in terms of combining the CPU and GPU on one chip, the PS4’s APU is currently the at the top of the chain.

The APU probably will come packaged with 4 cores instead of 8. If this is true, maybe we could see a variant of this APU appear in 14″-15″ laptops, which would be very enticing.
I hope they don’t cut back on the GPU. Having something like a 7970m in APU flavor could help with power issues and give Intel some more competition. Intel is starting to catch up on the GPU side with their next processor. AMD needs to keep the heat on or they may lose themselves in the desktop market even more.
Yeah, Intel’s next on-die GPU will have 40 “exectution units” (EUs) compared to 16 EUs within Ivy Bridge. So, we may see approximately 2.5 times the graphics performance with Haswell. I’m sure AMD and Nvidia are going to release more powerful and more power efficient GPUs for laptops and small form factor desktops within the coming months to combat Intel’s latest efforts.
Well… if a laptop with that APU appears, it’s practically better than my pc rofl!!! 😀
I’m happy to see tech coming along this nicely 😀 Quite sad that my pc is falling behind though… Next year… hehe next year 😉
