Irrational games has announced a new gameplay mode for people that like games to be challenging. 1999 Mode makes Infinite play like old FPS/RPG titles like Deus Ex 1 or System Shock and it’s sequel. No hand-holding “oh you can win no matter what build you pick” crap here. Oh no you will suffer if you make the wrong choices and you will die if you don’t properly prepare for battle. You won’t be able to reverse the decisions you’ve made. You can’t use weapons properly without the correct specialization and so on.
Man this mode sounds so good. Deus Ex HR’s “Give Me Deus Ex” mode was a nice throwback, but I honestly don’t think it went far enough. There were a number of gameplay elements in the game catered directly towards modern shooters that prevented it. From the sound of it Infinite’s 1999 Mode is going almost all the way down that road.
I can not wait for this game to come out. I’ve been eagerly anticipating it since it was announced back in 2010.

There is a slight typo in the first sentence. You said “more” instead of “mode.”
ALSO, this mode sounds awesome, frustrating, time consuming, and utterly amazing. Everything that I like in a video game.
Yeah this is how you should really make a game ‘appeal to everyone’. Normally they make the game appeal to everyone but those who want a challenge.
This is great to hear! Lately companies have been making FPS shooters too easy (ie: regaining health becoming a standard) and I personally miss the old-school games that didn’t have those luxuries. Without those handicaps it made the games more challenging and ultimately made winning more rewarding in the end. Definitely a thumbs up to Irrational Games for that throwback.
