Macs Possibly Getting Native Radeon Support

If it holds true, this would be very good news for those wishing for more graphics variety in their Mac Pros. According to the the hackintosh blog tonymacx86, the latest Mac OS X update released for Sandy Bridge-equipped Macbook Pros contains native acceleration support for the following cards:

Radeon 5xxx Seres:
ATI Radeon HD 5630 Device ID 0x68D8
ATI Radeon HD 5630 Device ID 0x68D9
ATI Radeon HD 5670 Device ID 0x68D8
ATI Radeon HD 5730 Device ID 0x68D8
ATI Radeon HD 5770 Device ID 0x68B8
ATI Radeon HD 5850 Device ID 0x6899
ATI Radeon HD 5870 Device ID 0x6898

Radeon 6xxx Series
AMD Radeon HD 6850 Device ID 0x6739
AMD Radeon HD 6870 Device ID 0x6738
AMD Radeon HD 6970 Device ID 0x6718

Obviously this would open up a decent amount of consumer choice for the typically closed hardware configurations that are prevalent in Macs. If the trend continues, no longer would users have to purchase specific Mac-version variants of graphics cards or resort to more unorthodox methods.

We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
