Err, Piston I mean. We all knew it was coming, and behold, a prototype box finally shows up at CES. The dinky machine, designed by Xi3 Corporation, will be the spearhead of Valve’s attempt to introduce themselves into living rooms everywhere.
While no specific details of the hardware internals were given other than a 1TB storage capacity, Xi3 did confirm that the machine was based on their high end X7A computer which has the following:
Processor: Quad Core x86 (Most likely an AMD APU)
RAM: 8GB DDR3
Ports: 4x USB 3.0, 4x USB 2.0, 4x eSATA, 2x Mini Display, 1x HDMI
Power: 40 Watts.
We’ll keep you posted.

Wow, that actually looks pretty cool :).
Wow, it has a really appealing look to it. I would definitely like to use it as a home theater PC. It probably will come packaged with Ubuntu or other Linix Distro. It shouldn’t be too hard to install Windows 7 or 8 on this either.
Definitely looks good. The thing is though, if it’s going to be a media pc it should have the dvd or better yet, blu-ray drive built in. Of course you’d need a home theater for the speakers but it’s practically asking people to upgrade that as well, if they only have a dvd.
Unless, as I said earlier, they plan on including apps for netflix etc and maybe, just maybe, plan on adding movie streaming to steam (which would make sense really. Gamers want movies, music, programs and video games and that would make steam offer everything, along with the OS).
Anyhow, it remains to be seen, but so long as the hardware specs are good, this will be good. 🙂 I just want them to make sure we all can install linux and game on our pcs. Don’t care about their “console” much ;P
Yeah, good point, one would have to get an external Blu-ray drive to watch movies. But, like you said, some could get away without a Blu-ray/DVD drive if they mainly used Netflix and we able to access to it.
Well that’s that, but there’s also the issue with sound. I mean you want a 5.1 system and it offers no ports for pc speakers so one expects you’d need a home cinema to go with it. Thus the drive could be absent with nobody caring, like me.
Also it could obviously support tons of external equipment with those ports so perhaps they are aiming for a low cost modular design, focusing on small size most of all.
That actually looks pretty cool, and if the specs are high-end (which I’m sure they will be), that would definitely be something to consider. I’m sure it would be a nice addition to many home theaters, especially with gaming and movie streaming capabilities!
