What came as a complete surprise to many at CES, Nvidia’s little mobile device was a great demonstration for their new chip, the Tegra 4. As many of you already know from the released specs, the Tegra 4’s hardware specifications are excellent, and Nvidia was very eager to showcase its power:
The demonstration runs in real-time on Unreal Engine 4.
Known Specifications
CPU: Tegra 4, Quadcore A15
GPU: Tegra 4, 72 core GPU
Screen: 5 inch, 720p display
Other: 1x microSD, 1x USB 3.0, 1x HDMI
OS: Android
The controller design also doubles as a wireless stand-alone controller that you can access your games with from your main PC.

720p on a 5 inch screen is pretty impressive. Although the tegra 4 only had 72 cores, it certainly seems like an okay amount of power for 720p.
5-8 hours of actually playing games and up to 24 hours watching HD videos, 4K video, and is able to play Unreal games and the run the next UE4 engine… Wow! That’s impressive.
Bad investment. How many years till I’m proven right? ;P
While it may be good for long road trips or if you travel a lot, I’m not really into these sort of things. I rather have a more portable and capable laptop, but the idea is still pretty cool. I’m sure there are quite a few people who are interesting in buying it.
At least it looks like this will make it further than the Panasonic Jungle :P.

Won’t make it further than the psvita though and that says a lot.
You maybe right. It looks like the Razer’s solution maybe a bit more viable considering that you can change the controls and add-ons (you can detach the controllers, add a keyboard, add a docking station, etc). The main problem with Razer’s product is most likely going to be the battery life (may only last 2-3 hours), which is why I was a bit impressed by the 5-8 gaming figure for Nvidia’s Shield.
However, Razer’s tablet does have more powerful hardware (x86 core i5 or i7 with 640m LE – it’s technically a laptop within a tablet form factor). So, if I had to choose, I would most likely go with Razer’s solution
Razer’s stuff is pretty much a gaming laptop-tablet hybrid if you ask me. Better chances to make some people happy than this. This should have stayed as tech to be used for tablets and cell phones in order to add gaming potential. Not become a console of its own.
It’s a hard market to compete in and I doubt nvidia will get a piece of that pie. Not to mention how the levels of care for that market keep dropping. When I was a kid everyone had a gameboy and played outside. How many kids have you seen playing on their psvita or 3ds out there?
That is a pretty impressive device, though I wouldn’t have much use for it at this time (I’m sure many would feel the same way). I don’t travel much or have a need for a handheld device to play games on the go. The pick-up-and-play games I have on my phone are all I need for that. For someone that is on the go a lot and plays handheld games though, I would see this being a perfect option, one that I would prefer over a PSVita or a 3DS.
