Google Services Disabled in China

This time the Great Firewall has been tightened even further on the search engine. There’s no need to get into any conspiracy theories though, the reason behind this blackout seems pretty obvious: The Chinese are in the process of a government shake-up.

Every ten years, the ruling Chinese Communist Party reselects its leaders at the highest echelons, increasing the risk of instability as power shifts to different places. The disabling of Google channels is most likely a precaution against unwanted leaks (such as who is selected) and chatter towards the ruling elite.

It is however, unlikely that such a blackout would continue indefinitely, so Googlers in China will just have to sit tight until the transition is over. Meanwhile, Baidu.com executives are probabaly out partying into the night spilling champagne everywhere.
