Are you one of those Mass Effect 3 fans that need their eyes peeled open? Or, perhaps you just want a recap of the DLC controversy surrounding the From Ashes? Either way, the video below sums up everything rather nicely.
Again, the From Ashes ME3 DLC includes the Prothean character as a squad mate. Prothean’s play a major role in the plot, which goes back to the first Mass Effect game. As you can see in the video, it was stated that the DLC was not included with the game and the “extra” content was made after the game was finished by a separate team. Furthermore, you notice that you can change a few lines of code in the PC version of the game, which gives you access to the DLC without any additional work needed. So, those against the day one DLC score a point and now it’s your move EA.
Update:
EA has responded to an inquiry from Kotaku.
From Ashes is a 600 MB+ download with all new content, including the mission on Eden Prime, new dialogue options and conversations with Javik, new cinematics, the Prothean weapon, and new appearances for all squad members. All of the above content was completed while the main game was in certification and are not available on the disc.
As stated previously, in order to seamlessly integrate Javik into the core campaign, certain framework elements and character models needed to be put on disc. We did something similar with Zaeed and Kasumi in Mass Effect 2.
So, perhaps the code tweak from the video does not unlock every aspect of the From Ashes DLC, but it is rather interesting that such a simple tweak can add the character right into the game in the first place.
I have the DDE so I can’t comment on what is or isn’t missing from the files on the disc however it should be noted that Bioware is always very careful with their wording. They use double speak and guard themselves pretty well against people calling them out on bullshit it’s a tactic they’ve well developed over the years even before being bought by EA. That said, their wording doesn’t cast doubt on many of the files being on the disc but they way they specify it as being finished after the game went gold says a few things. Now the question to ask is what does Bioware consider the core game and when was this team formed? We the community have known about From Ashes for about a year. That means it was planned for a while, but we don’t know when it was started. The size of the download does speak to some of it not being finished prior to the game going gold and I suspect EA is right about what isn’t on the disc.
The entire situation could have been avoid by EA simply giving everyone who bought the game new From Ashes for free. Find something else to include in the DDE to replace it, maybe the first big DLC expansion or just drop the DDE price by $10. EA and Bioware put themselves in this situation by being fucking stupid and greedy as all hell. It’s so pathetically easy to solve from the get go and does nothing but create unhappy and distrustful fans, neither or which is good for long term business. Fans have already been pissed off by Dragon Age 2 and their trust in Bioware has been heavily damaged from it, this whole situation is only making it worse.
As much as I hate this shit EA are not the only ones doing it. Street Fighter X Tekken has 12 characters, stories and endings on the disk. Plus alternative costumes for every character!
Derangel I have not played it yet, but someone on reddit was saying the From Ashes character was an important person in the ending? If this is true it will be core right?
Frobes has written 2 articles on the DLC and on the ending, shits about to get real
