Over 12,000 Modern Warfare 2 players were erroneously banned over the past weeks. Gabe Newell has acknowledged the error and sent an e-mail to banned players stating:
“The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn’t a game-specific mistake.”
As compensation, Valve will give a free pass for Left 4 Dead 2 to all affected players as well as another copy they can gift to friends.

Well this is a pretty good bit of PR. Admit the mistake, fix it, and then apologize profusely and offer a game to everyone, and two copies of the game to some people.
